Gold was considered to be a carrier of divine spirit. The Aztecs considered gold to be the face of their sun god- or fragments of the sun. Which left its rays inside the earth.
The golden colossus in the painting looking at the gold miner from above is a witness of the conquistador voyages that resulted in the conquest of the New World with the cross and sword. The golden phantom was always rising before them.
