In the turn of a pea pod the referee clearly is motioning ready. Notice the “muscles” of the oarsmen steadying up in anticipation of the command to go. At the same time the artist emphasizes the illusion of movement by the overall static quality of the image, making it clear that the rowing pod will not take off until the peas are ripe.
He suggests instead, that we focus on the details of the painting and take delight in the curls of the beanstalk in the upper right corner. The shapely tendrils are reminiscent of the ornamental splendor of the bars and railing in medieval homes. To paraphrase Goethe “hey, hold on a moment and look how beautiful it it!”
