Creating this picture, the artist has used mythological ideas of ancient Incas of Peru. According to their cosmology, the world is divided into three parts: the lower, underground world where the souls of not-yet-born people stay, the terrestrial world and the upper, heavenly world. Their symbols were, accordingly a snake, a puma and a condor
The same images symbolized the ascension of the human spirit- first; it crawls along the ground, like a snake, and then acquires strength and freedom of movement on the earth, comprehending the surrounding material world, like a puma. And finally the spirit of man comprehends its own internal world, thus acquiring the wings and like a condor penetrating the distant and imaginary worlds.
