In the history of navigation, the Strait of Magellan is one example of a passage to the West. Magellan’s Famous expedition is the theme of another painting by the artist (The) Spirit of Magellan. Sir Francis Drake, the famous seafarer-pirate, also passed through this strait half a century after Magellan. Curiously, the story of crew rebelling against captain repeated itself with Drake and had the same dramatic denouement. The narrow and dangerous passage near the tip of South America was unnerving enough to incite mutiny repeatedly.
