God is and was associated with the sun because of its glimmer and other such distinguishing characteristics. In the Incan Empire rulers rising to power underwent the ritual of having sap mixed with gold dust rubbed all over their bodies. This gave rise to the legend of the “golden man” or “el dorado”. Gold was considered to be a carrier of divine spirit. The Aztecs considered gold to be the face of their sun god- or fragments of the sun. Which left its rays inside the earth.
The golden colossus in the painting looking at the gold miner from above is a witness of the conquistador voyages that resulted in the conquest of the New World with the cross and sword. The golden phantom was always rising before them.
