Background
We know that the longitudinal lines of a growing tree follow the same pattern as the currents of flowing water. It was Leonardo who noticed the connection between the number of growth rings and the age of a tree. We can also easily spot ‘turbulences’ in the bark of the tree similar to the ones created by obstacles in the flow of water.
Key concept
Give the painting a 90 degree turn and you will see a daring surfer riding the waves of the roaring tree-ocean – hence the title. The cross current of swirling clouds brings an added dynamic to the scene.
