CELLIST

• Cello, with its exceptionally wide range, is often used as a solo instrument and as a section in string bands and philharmonic orchestras.
• It is an integral part of any string quartet and appears frequently in chamber ensembles. The butterfly, due to its lifecycle, is considered to be a symbol of the immortal soul. It begins life as a bright caterpillar, becomes a dark chrysalis that appears dead, and emerges through an apparent process of revival as a butterfly. As an emblem, the butterfly appears in the painting in the form of a cello and in the bow tie of the cellist. Moreover, a butterfly flutters among the flowers surrounding the musician, as if overseeing his actions. The butterfly is also a vivid metaphor of music, immortal music like that of Beethoven and Bach, that remains relevant through centuries. The blue trumpet-shaped flowers of the artist’s fancy are obviously part of that chamber ensemble led by the cellist.
And so the instrument is laid open, And the master commands a rondo, Derived from old songs, Grown among forest suites. And the inhabitants of the wood, The flowers, the beetles, the ants, and dragonflies Are catching the sounds never heard before From within the parted grass.
