Once upon a time, there lived a plain looking peacock. He was less attractive than other birds. Only with his huge tail feathers spread like the branches of a tree did he appear impressive to himself and – so he thought – to others. One day he was standing just like this – with his train arched into a fan – when a swarm of eyes came flying by, about a hundred of them – hard to tell exactly since they were moving so fast. “Ha!” they thought, noticing the tree from a distance. “Here’s a good place to take a breather!” And so they stopped, nestled into the soft tail feathers of the peacock. They settled for good and turned the peacock into the most beautiful bird of all.
