This painting is open to a number of interpretations and here are some of them:
- It is a well-known fact of nature – Cuckoo laying its egg in another’s nest
- The bird’s mistake – placing the egg in the basketball hoop; for poet Joseph Brodsky such a mistake is a consequence of physical loss: “On the deserted ground of a basketball court a vagrant bird has set its fragile egg in the steel hoop’s raveled net.” (Lullaby of cape Cod, 1975)
- Sports interpretation: the shot successful, the ball’s in the basket and at the forest referee’s whistle the score turns 1:0
